Dijit for iPad Preview: Dijit's iOS App Gets Reimagined for the Tablet

iPad owners using Dijit have been itching for a native iPad app, to say the least, and it looks like that wait will be coming to an end in the near future. It's not that you can't use the current version of Dijit on the iPad (many people do), but it's hardly an "optimized" experience for the increased amount of real estate the iPad's 9.7" screen offers.

Update 1-6-12: Now available!

Today, Dijit has gone public with the first look at the upcoming Dijit for iOS app, complete with native iPad support. The good news, however, is that Dijit has informed me they plan to submit the bits to Apple within the next two weeks.

From the looks of things, they've put in quite a bit of thought how to evolve Dijit for the bigger screen.

"In a nutshell, we've taken our iPhone app, and reimagined it for the iPad," says Jeremy Toeman, Dijit's Chief Product Officer. "We've tried to think through all the nuance of what a full, 10" entertainment console sitting on a user's coffee table should look like. We've made it very iPad-centric, and thought through nuances like how to visually help a user through seemingly complicated tasks like customizing a remote control layout or learn an IR code. Also, we've designed it to be very ergonomic, in that key features are lined up with where users typically hold their iPads."

Full details regarding all the new features and enhancements will be forthcoming, but what we do know is that the new release will be Universal, working with any iOS device (including iOS 5 support). We've also been informed the largest new feature is full screen remote controls, which was one of the top requests from users. Finally, we also know there will be number of iPhone/iPod Touch improvements, too.

It won't be long before we get to go hands on with the actual software to see everything that's changed, but until then we can look through the screenshots to get an idea of what's new and improved.

WOW, Matt, it looks as though you've outdone yourself and the wait for the native iPad version of Dijit for Beacon has been well worth it. From the preview screen shots it looks as if it is nothing less than revolutionary as a universal remote! Can't wait to put the beta through it's paces. Thanks for all your hard work.

When/if this has solid MythTV support I will definitely get it! I imagine it could be very big with MythTV HTPC users.

This is great. I only hope the developers won't stop there. I'd love to have my OSX MacBook Air or any Bluetooth capable computer drive the Beacon. That would be provide complete choice to grab whatever box you're working on to drive the Beacon.

My old pronto after 12 years of fine service is straight in the bin, as soon as you update the TV guide features for the UK.

Pretty please with sugar on top can you work on this for us next!

iPad version is looking fantastic, can't wait to download and try.

Keep up the great work!

Kudos on the new iPad app!

The new visual design is very pretty. Unfortunately, the "remote" part of the interface suffers significantly in usability.

The typical environment for A/V viewing is in a darkened room. The new almost-white UI is literally blinding in that kind of environment!

Additionally, the new button design is very pretty in and of itself; but you have, in effect, decreased the hit-target for users -- a huge no-no in touch interfaces. You've used a very light border against a very light background -- the "visible" target area has been reduced by the width of the combination of the [ container border + emboss effect + button border ] times two (since the border surrounds the button): not insignificant.

I think you could easily fix this by simply inverting the background so it's a dark metallic look instead of a light metallic look. I've tried snooping around in the .ipa file, but all the .pngs appear to just be dummies.

In looking at the screenshots again, it just hit me why you made the visual design choices you did on the remote: so it would match the overall UI of the new iPad app. Unfortunately, this doesn't change the usability issues for the "remote" part of the app, arguably the most-used area of the product.
