I just got the Beacon for Android.  The app is smooth, but unless I'm missing something, the system is unusable.

I'm using the Beacon with a Nexus One phone.  (The website says it is optimized for phones as well as tablets.)  Every time my phone turns off (two minute time-out) or I move out of range, then when I want to use the Beacon again, I have to reconnect.  The only way to do so that I have found is to press the top of the Dijit for 10 seconds until it begins flashing, then wait a few seconds, then use about three clicks on the phone to convince it to try connecting again (choose the device, confirm, etc.).  It all takes about a minute to re-establish the connection.  I just can't see how this is an acceptable way to use a remote control device.  If you're watching a movie, and have watched for more than 2 minutes, your phone turned off, and someone knocks on the door, can you really go through this connection procedure and wait a minute before pausing the movie?  What am I missing here?  Do more current Android phones have a better way to stay connected to Bluetooth devices?  Is my phone broken?  Or is this just an inevitable and unacceptable limitation of the Beacon?

Secondly, I can't find a way to make "Activities" or macros on the Android app.  Any clues?

Thanks,

   DaveT

Thanks for checking out the Android Beacon DaveT.

The Bluetooth situation on Android is complex, as every device and every version of the OS has a slightly different implementation. I've definitely seen the behavior you're describing and agree it makes the experience awfully difficult on these devices. We're currently working with Griffin on ways to keep the connection open longer without causing major impacts on the battery life of the Beacon and Android devices. I'll let you know what we come up with, but I would look for at least some improvements on this in the next update.

Activities is one of our most requested features on Android. I can't promise you a specific release date, but it's certainly something we want to get out there as soon as it's ready.

I just called Griffin to get an RMA, and the fellow there let me know that there is a more recent firmware update available. (Until that conversation, I had never seen nor heard of the Utility that updates the firmware, which, oddly, is a separate program from the main remote app.) The new firmware is better. It now tries to reconnect automatically. Still takes 10 seconds or so, even if you only just checked the notifications on the phone. Not at all idea, but much improved.
Activities are still a huge missing feature.
It would also be nice to have a PC app that allowed one to edit setting on the PC, then transfer them to the device. Besides easier editing, this would allow one to transfer a setup from one phone to another. (My wife and son have Android phones. Am I supposed to go through the entire setup again on each of their phones?) And, a PC editor would give a much better interface for adding media titles: e.g. for a CD changer.

Hi I haven't picked up the beacon yet since I have been getting such mixed reviews. I would love it if there were editing software for your PC. I have a Sony 400 disc changer and It would be cool if there were a scrollable widjet like the one for your bookmarks but you could add macros and thumbnail picks so once you pressed the movie pick it would control all your functions like my Philips pronto pro tsu 6000 does. Does that sound impossible?

The IOS version of the software let's you save off your entire dijit settings and migrate them to another device; except android..?
