Hi,

I purchased Beacon yesterday in the Thanksgiving sale (Yes the discount even reached as far as here in the UK!) - great piece of kit, 90% there, if only....

Background: As a long time Harmony Remote(s) user, I have a reasonable knowledge of setting up and programming these type of devices. Beacon & Dijit are a great combination, and very easy to use. (It still took me 6 hours to get it working on 4 devices and 5 activities - lots of false starts and device 'issues')

Unfortunately I have to report that the systems use is currently extremely limited in the UK, so much so, that its virtually unusable for (I guess) the majority of users. In my search for this forum I saw quite a few people saying they were taking it back as it didn't work!

So here is the list of things I think need addressing quickly (and in order of importance)

1) Support for Sky, Sky+ & Sky+HD Sat boxes

This is the No.1 SAT system in the UK by a VERY big margin and the current firmware simply will NOT control these boxes at all (despite learning the commands OK). If I drop back to the 0.3.11 version it just about works, but flakey: It requires learning, which is extremely painful and is missing features (see item 2)

(I assume the learning pain has eased according to the firmware update, but I can't update as it then stops driving the Sky box completely - talk about catch 22!)

2) The four colour buttons (Red, Green, Yellow & Blue)

These are used extensively in the UK (on Sky, but also many other set top boxes, TV's DVD's etc.) - yes we can make buttons by hand, but they are then huge buttons with words written in them. We have 20+ years of looking for four little round coloured buttons, its a simple system, and a very hard habit to break!

3) TV Guide

There are a number of TV Guide services in the UK, I have a couple of apps on my iPhone which are free - so I can only assume that the data must be free as well? its a little dis-ingenuous to sell the product as 'including TV Guide' only to discover after purchase that it only applies in the USA & Canada

4) Activities inside devices

To get to a particular channel Sky require a 3 digit code. I want a button on my Watch TV Activity that says BBC1 - when I press it, it send 101 to the Sky Box. etc.

5) Repeat on learned commands

Other things missing, but not unique to the UK:

a) Ability to have graphical buttons (User loaded / created)

b) Ability to call an external app from a button

Example: After switching on my Hi-Fi and setting the input to my Mac, I would like to launch the Apple Remote app so I can choose the music I want to listen to

c) Change background

and remove Dijit logo - taking up button space!

d) Playback mode

Remove top and bottom bars so only remote buttons in view (some sort of gesture to bring them back?)

e) Simple Sync option across linked devices

Logging out and back in is painful and risks getting restore wrong and overwriting the wrong device!

f) Ability to copy a setup and layout to use as a template for additional devices or activities

I think that’s all I can think of after a day of use - I am hoping the Dijit developers see this post? (I notice they have replied to other posts in the past)

Please look at the Sky issues ASAP, it really is killing the use of this great product in the UK....

Finally, great web site, thanks for setting it up, most useful.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

You hit the nail on the head with all your points; I'm probably about the same 'setup' ability as you as I programmed my own ProntoPro and this was my hope of finally retiring its wheezing clunky shell to some relative and getting a 'modern' solution.

I do think some of your later suggestions are 'nice to haves' but totally agree at a minimum Griffin need to fix the Sky+ vs programmable firmware version issue, and there should be customisable buttons (so we can create our RGBY buttons etc) and the lack of TV Guide for 'outside US/Canada' was disingenuous at best, dishonest at worst...

A note for people who are having problems with getting Sky+ working for now; go to the iTunes app store and download "Griffin Utility" - connect with the Beacon and go to "Release History" - download the "0.3.11" firmware version.

Once complete, you can use the digit app to add a device, select "Skyplus", "Satellite" and choose "Remote 1". A bit sluggish compared to your sky remote, but useable (apart from lack of colour R G B Y buttons for guide shortcuts...

Both,

Many thanks to you both for posting this information - it made using my new Beacon possible.

Kind regards,
Adrian

No problem, but I'm sad to say it still does not live up to my expectations - still too much of a faddy gadget and I don't see it replacing the multifunction controller I have (despite my earnest wish it would!) the hassle of bluetooth pairing etc along with well dcumented defficiences above means I'm sending it back to "Le grande Pomme".... ;-(  I'll revisit in a few years time, see if it has all moved on a bit!

Au revoir, dijit!! Money mouth

Hi,

Getting this for Christmas was really exciting. Which made the set-up even more crushing. What a disappointment. I have a Samsung TV, Pioneer Amp, Sky+HD satellite receiver, PlayStation 3 and an Apple TV. 2 out of 5 devices are catered for by a universal remote that claims to support over 20,000 devices.

I've now gone through the convoluted way of setting up the Sky+HD box. Hmm. Not a brilliant experience.

Universal remotes are not new technology, iPhone Apps are in plentiful supply, Bluetooth technology has been successfully integrated in to so much technology. This should be a match made in Geek heaven.

Please fix it or make it open source so the wisdom of the crowd can fix it for us.

The recommendations above are all Must Haves in my honest opinion.

Merry Christmas Griffin
Now get to work.

The best listing for a Sky+HD box is "BSkyB". My only problem is a lack of yellow, blue and green buttons; red is there. I updated to latest beacon firmware before finding it. The "British Sky" entry doesn't work, and neither do any of the "Sky" entries.

So far, I have successfully set it up with 3 TVs of different makes, a bluray player and, of course, Sky. Only the last one took any time. PS3 doesn't use IR, so it will never work for that. I don't think Apple TV does either. I have a Boxee Box, which is not IR either, but there is an app for it already.

Once e other 3 colours are supported and the TV guide function works, I'll be very happy with this product.

Great points Steve I entirely agree. As it stands my Beacon is practically useless. I cannot program it with my remotes (I am a Harmony remote and Pronto expert user, so it ain't me that's the problem).

A tip for those who are able to program the buttons - you can copy buttons from other setup devices to get your RGYB for Sky etc. I just can't get the learning function to bloody work!

The griffin device I got for Christmas and I've programmed a marantz RC2000mk11 before no problem. But the griffin just has mind of its own. It needs some major firmware updates to change it from a brick to a working device. It's a great concept still very much in alpha testing. Gaven up with it just gavering dust until hopefully one day some firmware makes it at least in to beta. I could not get it to learn things direct from the venders remote so I would get the marantz to learn it then teach the griffin from there this would work sometimes. But very flaky.
I'm a techi in IT so. Playing around with devices debugging etc and making things work is my living. But this device I wasted so much time on and got nowhere with.

Hello I'm a new user here and I'm totally confused!!! I have looked at the listing of available devices in the Dijit app in order to set up my Sky+ box. Some on this thread have suggested using BSkyB Device others SkyPlus but try as I have I can only see an entry for Sky there is no BSkyB and no SkyPlus. The two remotes under Sky do not work !!! What am I doing wrong and why can I not see othere remotes that others must be seeing ???

It does not work with apple tv

September 21, 2012 9:06 AM

Hi i have now gone back to firmware 3.11 and managed to get sky working by customising and learning. If I upgrade to the most recent firmware will I lose my sky functionality again and when is a proper fix coming? It just would not work with the new firmware.

October 10, 2012 9:06 AM

Any update or progress in getting this to work with Sky here in the UK ??

I bought my Beacon on Saturday 7th Oct. when i saw it in Tesco. Haven't really programmed anything like it before and so after about 2 hrs of trying to get things working I was ready to box it back up again and return it. However, after giving it a rest, returning to it on Sunday, things began to fall into place. I found that things like my Samsung TV, Sony Blu-ray, Toshiba DVD and HDDVD and Panasonic projector were easy to set up using the auto set up available on the Beacon via the digit app. I would say that not all functions were available but certainly the main ones required for playback. I had to use the learning facility for my Harman Kardon AVR which was not listed and had to use some lateral thinking to deal with the separate on/off power buttons. As mentioned elsewhere, the Sky HD+ did cause a problem but as also alluded to the latest update via Griffin Utility made it easier. Still can't replicate a number of functions and the RGYB buttons which would be nice as the Sky+ remote iPad app which I tend to use, doesn't yet allow access to on demand or last channel. Also the D pad and swipe pads are so sensitive to be useless. So, where am I so far? Well, I have managed to programme activities to turn everything on/off for 'Watch TV', 'Watch Movie' & 'Listen to music'. Still have a couple of things to perfect but by ankd large I'm quite pleased. Did find that the batteries drained rapidly during all the learning process to the point of being dead after 3 days which I thought was poor, so I got replacements from Tesco for free when I complained. Either the batts were faulty or it is going to be an issue. Also while the packaging says it's for iPad, it is really designed for iPhone and magnified so along with the inability to get TV listings - a little disingenuous Griffin. Oh and what about the appearance it's a bit bland - grey and orange with white background- not what was shown on the box, so Dijit any chance of changeable 'skins' to customise the appearance?
All in all, I think it's worth the money. What I wanted was to use one device (iPad) to carry out basic functions (not change settings or too much menu fiddling) while watching TV or pj in the dark. So far it seems to fit the bill.

Hello all.

I imagine everyone agrees with most of your points above!

As a new user, it's puzzling why most of these things aren't now implemented. Especially odd is that all 4 colours of buttons already exist in the Dijit iOS app. Presumably Dijit subcontracts this software programming & that programmer doesn't read the Community posts?

I've tried uploading a photo' of my initial BEACON DIJIT layout from my iPad, but that failed with some Java error, so now trying from my mac. First observation is this forum complains (silently) about .jpeg but it's reasonably happy with .jpg uploads. There seems to be no "preview post" though so I'll only know if it worked when I've submitted this post Undecided

I'm sending a pic' first to get feedback as I don't have SKY® but do have a satellite receiver with coloured buttons so want to check if this is what you're all looking for Smile

There seems to be no updates in the scant documentation, as some ref's to "Advanced" don't exist in the menus on the present firmware/software. I'm writing a brief doc' of my own as I go along so I'll post it if there's any interest when I've completed it.

One BIG current problem is how to save my settings to go on another family member's iOS device! Try as I might, I cannot get anywhere with submitting email address & password to create a Dijit account Frown I don't use Twitter or Facebook (life's too short) so Dijit account is only possibility.

It didn't work, but I think this will Smile I needed to click on the file name adjacent to the photo as well as press Upload.

Hello there.

The only way I know of is to make an account at dijit from the dijit app, either on your iPad or iPod. As i mentioned in my post, inexplicably the account creation didn't work. Anyway, the umpteenth time I tried it, I happened to be disconnected from Beacon (Bluetooth off) & an account was created Laughing Could be coincidence & maybe a server problem at Dijit's end, but just try it anyway.

Having done that, when you login from the app on another of your devices, you get a new option of restoring your settings. For me that's essential, or I'd spend hours repeating the device entries.

Matt Whitlock has done a sterling job of writing a few tutorials here, but initially I was perplexed as my iPad Dijit screens look nothing like his! When I logged in on wife's old 3G iphone, the Dijit device screens were completely different to my iPad ones, but then Matt's tutorials started to make more sense.

As to your colours question, it beggars belief that there are tons of questions on coloured buttons but hardly any answers. Apparently the USA has no coloured buttons for national TV devices, but they do import (maybe even make) media players. Several media players *do* have coloured remote buttons, so all you need to do is select eg., the

Xtreamer

media player from the Diijit database, & hey presto you have all 4 buttons you need. Now just drag those over to your own layout, & use your device remote to learn the appropriate codes.

You don't need to include the  Xtreamer, just use it as a button source.

Mede8er player has them too, but unfortunately Dijit spelt it incorrectly as Mediator, so a tad harder to find. I'd inform Dijit but don't know how to, or if anything would happen anyway.

It's all a great shame, as the beacon is a handy device.

HTH.

Many thanks.

Did that and it all worked :)

Got 4 colored buttons that I ve have reassigned plus been able to use both ipad and now a little ipod .

I'm trying to get the iPhone app to work on my sky+HD box and I've nearly got it working but when I use the D pad and press 1 of the directional arrows it is as though I've pressed it twice. I've tried to reassign them using the remote but all of the buttons on the app stop working. Can anyone help?
Cheers

Hi, I have just got my device today, and found I am having the same issues as most UK users on here, regarding the Sky remote had no real issues here apart from the lack of coloured buttons, but after reading the threads I am going away to try resolve that, the last post refers to the double click when selecting programmes etc in the sky plus menu, this is easy to sort:
Go to edit remotes, then edit device and change the I R repeat from 0 to 1 this will resolve your issue.

Unless I am missing a trick I have noticed the lack of device set-ups for Blu ray home cinema systems, I have the Panasonic BTT755, it would be a great help to the less talented on here if such items of equipment were added in the programming section.
